What are your overall feelings regarding the conclusion of 19 Minutes? Did Picoult do the right thing killing off Peter Houghton? Was Matt deserving of Josie's "revenge?" Is this book important to teach to the incoming 8th grade class? If yes, why?
A place for thought provoking discussion
I loved NINETEEN MINUTES. It IS my favorite book! The one thing I didn't like though was that Peter killed himself. I think that he went through to much just to end his life.....I know it would have never happened but I was hoping that Josie and him could have gotten married or something? By, far one of my favorite parts was when Josie stood up for herself, finally. I don't know that killing was the best but at least she made it clear that she went through everything for him while he gave her nothing. If you add up all the abuse and suffering Josie did for him it would probably add up to a human life.
ReplyDeleteThis book should definitely be read to 8th graders. And there is no better class than Mrs. Carr's and Mr. G's! I think that the 7th graders coming up need this book to show them that it isn't all fun and games. So many kids don't take bullying or dating seriously. As I watched 3rd and 5th period I saw that we have definitely imporved on how we look and act toward each other. And this book has made us mature as a family.

Honestly, I didn't like the ending. I didn't like that Peter sufficated himself. Peter did deserve to get prison time. I think it's just a shame for a guy who got picked on that much to get an end result of death. Matt did deserve to get shot. He's a guy who's taking advantage of Josie day in and day out. A guy who takes advantage of her and others (Peter). Again, it's a shame Josie got 5 years for something that she only did as a result of what someone else did to her. I think Matt was the killer who killed himself. Lastly, I do think this book should be read by future 8th grade classes. It's a very telling and deep story that will hit everyone in the heart.

It has to be one of my new favorite books. I can't say it beats out the Harry Potter series but its up there. I have to say, It did have a suspenseful ending even though i like knew that peter would kill himself one way or the other. Do i think she did the right thing? I guess. It could've gone either way. He could've lived his 480 years and walked away ( i sure hope not) or he kills himself. YES!!! Matt had gotten away with so much with Josie because she never had to guts to do anything. And for the one moment that she was overpowering matt because she had a gun she took her chance and did what she should've done a long time ago. ( i mean she should've broke up with him a long time ago, not kill him . Yes. i believe it has many powerful messages that 8th graders need to know going into highschool. Now i know that if i see a kid being bullied, being one of the bigger kids in my grade i will step in and break it up and help the victim.

19 minutes had the perfect ending and kill peter was the right thing beceause thats what he wanted to do in the first place and josie getting revenge eas perfect i did not see that coming and you should defanetly have your next class read it beceause just by read this book my life has chenged i think alot more about what i am doing and hoe it is going to effect others the book was a life changeing experince for me- TJ
ReplyDeleteI think the ending of this book was one of the most inmportant things out of the whole novel. Josie's revenge and Peter killing himself. It makes sense. Throughout the book we saw how Josie gets abused and hurt almost everytime shes around Matt, even if shes doing something good. People can't take everything and when Josie got to the gun she had to make a choice. Kill her one REAL friend or kill the person who has been hurting her for one too many times. She went with the killing of Matt. This is revenge so it brings me back to the other log about revenge. Most people would think that this is wronge but i beg to differ, if she didn't kill Matt then he would kill her. That's what i think. If the book had a different outcome and Josie Killed Peter instead of Matt, then some how Matt would kill Josie.
ReplyDeleteWith Peter killing himself was also the right schoice in my eyes. That was his main goal, and i think his main dream. Since Peter has been through so much all he wanted to do was get out. Get out of life, the pain, and the pressure. I think Peter had one of those dreams and from that day on all he wanted to do was accomplish his dream, his goal. The reason I think Peter didnt put the gun to himself when he had the chance because he wanted everyone to know why. Why he did this, why they deserved what was coming, and why he had to do to what he did.
This book is very important and i think that next year 8th graders will need this. It has a lot of meaning to it and will teach them important things in life. It will show them some things that happen all around the world and inform them what really goes on in the "big bad united states of america"
hollyyy.
this book has to be one of my favorite books of all time, sure some parts i didnt like, but thats just like every other book. i thought the conculsion was surprising, but something that needed to happen. i thought peters death made sense. for one all the pain he went through all of his life was stilling eating away at him, because there was so much of it. second, although he came off as if he didnt care that he killed those people, to a certain degree, i think he did, it was another thing that was eating away at him, also he had to relive all those killings and seeing the pictures, and hearing the stories and upset families, it must have eaten away more of him each time. third, he really had nothing to live for. spending the rest of your life in jail when you are only 18, thats only like 20% of your life being over, theres so much left, and it is a crapy way to spend it in jail, always thinking and reliving all of those moments, and having no future, no chance at having a life again. fourth, he wanted to kill himself anyway, so i guess in his eyes its never to late to end your life. and last but not least, i think he kinda ended his life on a good note, josie was his friend again, and i think knowing that someone stood up for him (better yet josie stood up for him) and that josie loved him, was what he wanted all along. so i think when he ended his life, it was what gave him the feeling that everything really was going to be okay. i do believe that matt devsered what he got served. he had put josie through so much mental pain, some even phyical, that what he said to her during the shooting made her realize what a true "butt" he really was. if you think about it joise would be like the peter in the realationship and matt was, well matt. he bullied her and pushed her around, made her feel like nothing. but the big difference between her and peter was she had something to stand on and could lose, her popularity. so she "couldnt" do anything. and when peter stood up for him by shooting people, i think he gave josie courage to stand up for herself too. absolutley, 100% yes this book should be tought to next years class. it was one book that was completely eye opening to me. it was soo real, thats it soo hard to think about. i dont think it was just the book that was great, it was the way you thought it. so you better keep up the good work. but anyway, this book should be something that everyone needs to read and get the message of !!

hmmmm well josie didnt have to kill matt....really...eavery one deserves another chance, and well killing matt he cant get another chance. i think being shot in the back would teach matt that josie can stick up for herself and that matt would possibly change who he is because the events that happaned to matt lead him to parrylyzation. o and that josie can stick up for peter. and peter dying.. well it said 8 consecutive life years in prison so he was gonna die eventually..why not do it right then and there. jail is a bad place and if i were peter i do the same thing. yes you should read this book in the next 8th grade class and the one after that and the one after that. this book has a great message and every one should know it.well it has alot of great messages but anyway yea just keep on reading.

i am happy that matt died and better to find out that josie helped best move ever in my view

I lovved the book Nineteen Minutes. Jodi Picoult is suchhh a great writer, and i my opinion I thought the entire story line from start to finish was terrific. I do believe that Matt was deserving of what Josie did because what he did to her was much worse depending on how you look at it. I think the ending was great. It really didnt matter that Jodi Picoult ended up writing that Peter killed himself because he was givin a life sentence. I think it would be good if you carried on the book to the 8th grade class next year. I enjoyed it and I do not like reading. I now, because of reading Nineteen Minutes, want to read her other books, even if their 100's of pages long.
