Are You Educated for the Real World?

Some people feel that the public school system does not adequately prepare students for the real world. Identify one improvement you think schools need to make in order to better prepare students for life after high school. Write a blog to the school board in which you describe this improvement and explain why it is needed.

  1. Dear school board,
I think one thing that schools need to change to better prepare students is to every single student in the eighth grade go through a class like Ms. Carr's and Mr.G. This class teaches us about real problems in the real world. It is a class for open mindedness. Every student should
have the advantage of gaining the knoledge that me and my fellow room 211 classmates have. Students who take this class will be the ones who think before they do anything out of high school and they will be the ones whos eyes are open and minds are open. We have been taught a "different way to think". We have learned so much about the outside world and anyone who took the class would agree (right guys?). Anyway, every student should have this advantage by the end of their eighth grade year because it WILL helpthem in life. It will help them understand situations and it will be the one class were they will be able to look back on and say for a definate that that class has helped me get through life. It helped me make the right desicisons. So this class would prepare many of the eighth graders for the world outside of highschool. Students need to now about the real world because its not like high school. (Well, that's what i've been told anyway) So why not have a class that teaches us what we would need to know for the real world?

  2. Dear schoolboard of unknown school,

I have to say that there are some pointless subjects that we ahve to take. like social studies for example. when in our lives will somebody ask when teh civil war was or something like that. nobody really unless your on jepardy. I think we should ahve more classes like ours. We've learned more about the world and challenges that we're going to have to face soon than any other class i've ever been in. and yea we've barely done any grammar this year but we've been doing that since 1st grade. this is the first class ever where i know that i'll walk out of there and be able to use what we've learned later in life

  3. Dear Schoolboard,
Kids go to school learing about the plantes, wars, grammar, and fractions but who is really giong to need to know that in the real world? The real world is about the right choices and about feelings. The school should have more classes that tell you about the things that really matter. Like Ms.Carr and Mr.G's class. They get you ready for the real world. I know when I come out of there class that I can use what I just learned. So in the school there should be more classes like Ms.Carr and Mr.G's.

  4. Dear Schoolboard,
Kids souldn't be learning about this crap we learn about in school. Every grade should teach you about what you are going to experience outside of school at that age. Like 8th grade the class would be about learning whats instore for you at the age level at ages 13 and 14. But ok until like 6th grade you should leanr about how to speak and write properly but once you hit 6th grade you start teaching the kids what they will be going through and each grade you step it up . Like with 8th grade you start teaching kids about sexual activity (not that i have experience) and the effects of alchol and drugs. No projects just life skills and every year it takes a step up.

  5. Dear Schoolboard
we learn so much that we will never use when they should be preparing us for the real world and there needs to be classes like our language arts class that tells you more about bullying and that there is two sides in this world a good and bad but they just want us to know about the good one and they don't deal with real life situations thats why our language arts class is
    so imorntant

  6. Dear Mr. or Ms. School man/lady,
I want a class that would start on the first day with a small group of students going to there "real lives class". A teacher will guide them to the back of the school when a masked man jumps out with a "gun" and tells everyone to get on the gound. Now, I bet your wondering "wow Trent, why in the world would that happen". The answer is simple, there actors. I want a class the indures the child to real lives thing, mainly rape, robbery, thieft, drugs, acholic, weapon, and gererally mean people. Thats what we need, an class to prepare us for life, now i'm not saying any of that will happen to you, but if it does, knowing the date of the Treaty of Paris, or how to add and subtact factions will not help you when your in a bank robbery.

  7. Dear School Board,

I think there should be a class about everyday life and what happens. It would teach us every day things and make us relize the true meanings of life. The reason im saying this is because two days ago one of my brothers friends commited suicide. I knew this person and he was pretty cool but unstable. If he went through a class like that, i think it would have helped him alot. He would have talked about other suicides, murders, bullying, robbery attempts, rapes, drugs, guns, etcs... and good things like life, seneres, sports, cars [ he's a guy so yeah ], and all the happy things. it wouldn't just be bad. they would talk about all topics. sad, bad, mean, nice, awesome, depressing, hurting, amazing, cool... you know. all that stuff.

  8. Dear, Mr. or Mrs. President of the board.

Classes should be like Mr.Girodano and Ms.Carrs class. I also think classes should be like do it your self type classes. We cant have teachers or parents holding our hands all the to college graduation. If people hold our hands we will not be ready for the real world.

  9. i think schools should clone mr g and ms carr and put them in there school. so everyone would be prepared for the bullying that you will witness and feel. and the things people will do or you will do-jefe

  10. Do any of you wish you had other related arts choices such as: wood shop, mechanics/auto tech, home ec (cooking, lifeskills, etc) or anything else hands on? If so, which one and why would it benefit you.

  11. Schools should improve their teachers. A good teacher is hard to come by, but why does it have to be that way? Shouldn't the person teaching a subject first of all like children, like the subject, and care enough to deliver it in a way that will make whatever content seem important? If math, science, social studies, and language arts are mandatory... then good educators should find a way to relate their class topics to the real world and what's expected in the future. That would just help everyone a whole lot.

  12. In your opinion, what makes good teaching? You know, I've often thought about it and I feel light years away from being a good teacher. There are canyons of knowledge I need to learn. Also, do you think that it is a hindrance that as a teacher I'm still learning?

  13. G.P.( a little personal)
Sometimes, all the time, life teaches itself. I think alot of the things we are taught in school we couldn't really learn anywhere else. I don't mind there not being a majoirity of kids in Ms. Carr's class, because that almost puts me in a higher thinking level than some of then. It gives me soemthing I can even pass on. Some of this could come off very courrpt or competitive, but sometimes it feels good to know I'm a step above of some of the other kids. If you don't understand that feeling you don't, but I bet some of you do. I feel more confident in who I am when I figure something out on my own, like the expresion "I learn better while playing the game. If all my life skills were handed to us that wouldn't really give anyone the chance to be independent.
I've actually fantasised about what Trent was saying in his comment( like what if In a life skills class the teacher opened an unloaded gun to my head and actually asked me "what do you do now?" it would defintally be an attention grabber and would make the class more intresting. But I think that sounds more like a class like "Army Skills 1.01" or "Live or die scenerios level 2"
How teachers should prepare us for highschool? I've never been to highschool. As far as social issues go, everyone is Ms. Carr's class is prepared for high school. Wether or not your ready for the academics part of it probally depends on your actually grades in the class. But people find a way to get by, even if I'm not prepared for high school and whatever stress or hard work awaits me I'l take it on and I think I'll manage.I signed up for wood shop, it was kind of a last minute thing but I'm glad I picked it. Alot of what kids learn are from parents, but I don't feel like my dad's really shown me how to take care of my own house when I'm older as well as maybe one my friend's (example: Siegler) is has been prepared. I'l never forget one of the embarresing times in my life where Hunter and Trent's dad came over an chopped wood while it didn't seem like my dad knew how to lend a hand and I just remember thinking damm I hope I'll never be that kinda of guy"
Life continues to teach, it doesn't matter who you are a teacher, a principal, a proffesional althete or an accounting profesioanl, you'l be learning until the day you die and might not even realize it.

  14. oh and sometimes I feel like teachers loose patience a little too easy and it becomes more like them telling me "what's your problem? you should know this" and less of me saying "what's your problem? why aren't you helping me know this?"
But ya know, if that's how it is that's how it is, I guess were expected to stay focused at preety much all times, but my mind tends to wonder or I might socialize and miss something, but I can't really help it.
But i'll live, and I'll enjoy living

  16. One more comment...couldn't hurt... G.P.-
I feel like alot of teachers today spend more time thinking about what the kid does wrong and not enough time thinking about what did I do wrong and how can I help this kid succeed?
A good teachers should take all of this in considereation step by step
    1. What's the kid's probelem
    2. Why does he have this probelm, did I make a mistake
    3. How can I fix his problem

but with so many students, it's almost impossible to keep track of everyboddy and that could be what causes teachers to loose patience

  17. Mr. G, you and Ms. Carr have nothing to worry about. You have been much more than anything I could have asked for this year. Honestly, you are amazing teachers and believe me when I tell you, I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. And as far as you still learning, I'd be worried if you weren't learning. With growth comes knowledge. You guys are the best.

    Sincerelyyyyyyyyyy,
    Linton

  18. There is only some teachers that really dont teach us stuff that we will only learn for about one week then we will never use it agian. we would never use some of the stuff we learn in math and ss.But there is la that the stuff we learn in mr.g or ms carr we can bring with us for the rest of are lives. the only thing i would change is we should only learn stuff that we can use maybe 10 year down the road and less of the stuff were only gonna learn for a week.

  20. I think that most schools should start teaching us about the real world and not everything is sunshine and candycanes and NOT GETTING US FREAKED OUT FOR HIGHSCHOOL! Anywho I think that we should be like that movie accepted were we teach the teachers about what we wanna learn not about what they wanna learn like bmx tricks or UFC fighting. I want to have fun while im learning not drool my brains out learning about the treaty of paris. I know teacher wont do this( besides Mrs Carr. and Mr. Giordano) because they like the way they do it and there not up to date on what people wanna learn now.

  21. I agree with Steve. The teachers aren't going to change how they teach even though their teaching lessons aren't up to date.(Accepting Mr. G and Ms. Carr.) but teachers shouldn't be scaring us with the threat like "You think this is a lot of homework, Wait until you get into Highschool," or "You think I'm a picky teacher, you just wait and see." or other things like that because all that does is tell us that highschool is going to be harder then 8th grade and we are going to be nervos if they keep telling us those kind of things. Teachers shouldn't be making us afraid of highschool, they should be helping us embrace it.Also a good teacher puts the time and dedication into teaching his/her students. They care if you fail a quiz or need something more. Every teacher should help there students thrive to be the best they can be. They should like their job. If they liked their job then they would like helping kids be the best stdents they can be. If you don't like your job as a teacher and don't want to put the time into helping your students by maybe spending a little extra time after school one day to understand or maybe just helping them stay motivated, then I'm sorry but those kind of people shouldn't be teachers. -Taylor
