Judging Lives

The underlying question throughout this novel is whether or not one event should be used to judge a person and his life. Yes, in nineteen minutes Peter shot many classmates. This was a horrible act and one that he had to be punished for. Does this act negate all other aspects of Peter?

  2. No, people should get to know the person before and after the event. The should not get judged on one thing they have done. As a kid I do stupid thing and people dont judge me on that one thing that I have done. Yea I know Peter did kill kids and thats bad. There was nobody to talk to. Hes just a kid and he made one big mistake. I think people should get to know him because he could become your bestfriend, or girlfriend or wife its all about giving people a chance.

  3. I don't think one event should describe a person. Yes, what Peter did was arguably one of the worst things a person could have done. However, it shouldn't make people judge him. It may be hard to forget and forgive, but, hey, would Peter have done if he wasn't bullied?........I don't think so.......

  4. how could you judge one person, on one act that they did. the action that peter committed was completely wrong and he had to be punished for it, i agree with that 100%. however you should not judge one person on one act because one, people do change, and two sometimes people do what they do out of like, pure reaction, idk how to put it. i mean that something just clouds over your brain to stop you from thinking and you just react. that those moments you have no idea what you are going to do. it just comes as pure instint. and when people are at a low moment it doesnt really give you a great sense of how they are and people will judge you on how your mood is all the time. peter is a great example here. if he had not had all those bullies throughout all of his life, the result would probably not be as devistating as it was. but what people had done to peter was put that cloud over his brain. well he knew what he was doing, but he didnt see the other ways out he had. so the people basically backed him into a corner of his brain and he saw no other way out, so his reaction was to kill people in his high school. but when peter was young he was a cute and quite little kid. but now his actions had landed him in a place that is horrible. peter should not be judge on his reaction, because every action has a reaction. the action was the people bullying peter and his reaction to that was shooting students. therefore peter should not be judge on his moment of weakness because he couldnt see the way. people change and people grow, you just have to put together all the pieces until you have a general idea of what that person is like.

  6. you should never judge a person on one event in their life. Have any of you wanted to hurt someone because they picked on you but yet you are still a good person. Peter was a genious on a computer and proved it when Jordan asked him about the game and Peter answered it. He was stupid to go shoot up a school, yes but he should be given some slack I mean we have all been bullied but on that magnitude it is hard to phathom

  7. Yeah, taking the lives of innocent people totally overpowers any good deed he ever did. People don't change. Sorry.

  8. It shows he did have a heart at one point and that things change. I do beleive in destiny and i have a wallpaper on my ipod thatdescribes its perfectly i thought. It says " a person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it." I beleive this fits because he spent so much time trieing not to get picked on it lead him to his desicion i dont not have any pity for him but, things happen for reasons that sometimes need a little help to be seen.

  9. No, you shouldn't judge people on one act, but many. If the person (peter) is constily killing, then yes, he is a murderer. But, if he was tired of being pushed around then he found only one way to stop it. Everyone cut off the other routes and then turn around to say he's a monster.

  10. Peter did murder 10 people and that's a fact. But I'm going to take Peters life and score it. Murder= -1000. Being born with a perfect older brother and dealing with it = +100. Stealing two guns from retired cop= -500. Dealing with a life of bullies = +900. Losing a beast friend= +100.
Having the courage to tell Josie he liked her= +500. All this equals about +100. Positive number equals good. In my eyes, Peter is not a bad kid, he just made a bad choice, an understandable mistake, but not forgivable mistake, but I get why he did it.
P.S. I agree with Jeff, I miss the journals like a baby misses his mother.

  11. I agree with Trent(and all his math). He made a bad mistake and guess what?! EVERYBODY makes a mistake!!!!! It might not be as big as Peter's was but I get where he came from, though I've never been bullied like Peter. What he did can never be taking back and as bad as this sounds, he had a reason, well maybe not to kill 10 people but to snap like he did. Peter isn't a bad person. But when you been put down your whole life you snap. There probably would be signs but maybe not.

  12. This is not replacing journals. We are just talking outside of class. I love the blog. You guys and gals are incredibly smart. Your responses are well thought out.

Trent, you are becoming an all-star blogster!

Jeff, I am so proud of you. You are letting us "in" and I love what I see.

  13. thnk you mr g and trent nice math stuff that i didnt get at all. anyway peter to me seems like hes easy going and is chill. sohe killed ten people, and sure if he makes it out of jail alive hell never be able to forget that. hell try but one way or another it will come back to him. but if i were in that situation and say i got shot in the back and now icant walk or do any of that good stuff. well i think i could forgive peter and possbly want to talk to him. impretty sure he shot me for a reason and i would appologize. but peter is not a bad kid and that all-jefe

  14. Wow Jeff, I think your experiences have led you to believe that Peter may not be all that bad. Kids mess up, right? Again, great comment.

  15. It isnt fair to judge Peter on his one act.People make mistakes but i agree this was a big mistake but the ones who drove him to this decision should be punished to.And if people would actually looked from Peters view and not just listen to the media and only hear that high school student shot up his high school.People shouldnt be so quick to judge.

  16. My answer would be no,a person shouldn't be judged on a single act, good or bad.Peter could of been a good kid,but people never gave him a chance.Infact i don't think Peter would have shot up the school if people ever gave him a chance. An easier way to think about this would be to break it down in a smaller situation, say Mr.Rudman is holding tryouts for the baseball team next year and this new guy walks in with a nice looking AAU jersey on with all-star patches going down the sleeves and Mr.Rudmans goes,"Wow that kid really looks like he can play!",but then they get out onto the field and Mr.Rudman throws him about 100 pitches over the span of a few days and the kid can't hit one...which is a true story by the way.

  17. I think that when peter commited this crime people lost the interest to get to know him and shouldnt just because he commited this crime shouldnt mean hes a bad person and people should get to know him. Committing a crime doesnt mean that he isnt a nice and cool guy in other ways. Like the saying " Dont judge a book by its cover"

  19. Peter was a really good person but Matt and his friends started to push him too much and that why peter shot some of his classmates

  20. in life everyone deserves a second chance. for peter what he did make him look like the worst person in the world but the side of peter we she in the book is a great kid with a bright future but matt royston and all of his friends pushed him to the point were peter stoped careing and just let everything go and he was a great kid but now his life is going to be ruined no matter what beceause the way people will look at him and think of him -TJ
